How much general liability insurance do I need?

The higher the risk of injury on your job site, in your place of business, or from your products, the more general liability insurance you will need. Also, if your business operates in a state that generally awards high settlements to plaintiffs who file suits against businesses (i.e. slip and fall claims, defective products, and the like), you may need higher general liability coverage. A good minimum for most small businesses will be between $500,000 and $1 million – unless the business operates in a high-risk field like construction, or deals regularly with the general public in a fixed location like a retail store.
